I honestly believe standing firm begins with humility. Scripture tells us over and over about the perils of pride;
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall - Proverbs 16:18
God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble - James 4:6
Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall - 1 Corinthians 10:12
It's so easy for pride to slip in when we take the view that because we are standing firm or knowledgeable in one area, we stand stronger than those who don't have the same understanding. Knowledge truly puffs up, but love edifies -and love is meek!
So when thoughts rage with things like - not needing to go to that Church or event God is leading you to, or not reading that book, not needing to pray or spend time with God, not needing to apologise etc, we must take heed. We need to constantly bring our hearts before God, and remember that our standing firm is not by our own strength or knowledge, but simply in our resolve to remain in submission to the One who knows, sees, and upholds all.
Truth is not information and facts, or even knowledge alone. Truth is a person; Jesus (John 14:6). He must be the foundation we build our lives on, and His word must be what we are filled with.
The enemy will always attack our minds with lies, and when we believe and agree with those lies we will find ourselves stripped of all courage and confidence. Lies cannot be tolerated because cause us to fall into the trap of questioning (doubting) God.
Do we believe that God is who He says He is?
Do we believe that we are who God says we are?
Are we meditating on offences or negative thoughts about others?
Will we stand on the Truth even when emotions and circumstances would have us believe otherwise?
Food for thought;
Therefore take up the whole amour of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness... - Ephesians 6:13-14
Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth - John 17:17
The grass withers, the flowers fades, but the word of our God will stand forever - Isaiah 40:8
Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock - Matthew 7:24-25
The Bible likens our hope in Christ to an anchor, and anchors have ropes! Whatever we have our hope in we become tied to and we are pulled in that direction. When our hope remains in Christ, and we trust Abba's faithfulness to fulfil His every word, we continue to be drawn closer to Him. Imagine what happens to our souls (mind, will and emotions) when they are tied to things that offer no stability or security! Our minds and emotions will be pulled this way and that, tossed to and fro by the waves of life.
So let us continue to have our hope in Christ, His word, His promises and trust His Wisdom, His ways and His timing for our lives. Just because we may know His Will, does not mean we will always understand His Ways.
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful - Hebrews 10:23
So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary - Hebrews 6:18-19
But the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love - Psalm 147:11
Be encouraged guys!
