Receiving Abba as Father | A Psalm 23 Journey

Updated: Jun 7, 2020

Hey Guys!

This blog links to episode 26 of the KIRWN Podcast. In that episode I shared a bit about the journey of how I came to receive Abba as my Father. Along the journey I found my life as well as “landmarks” for this journey located in Psalm 23. These “Landmarks” are the different ways in which we can get to know God and receive Him in our heart as our Abba Father.

These “Landmarks” (in no particular order) are:

SHELTER – Abba wants to become our place of Shelter. In every way and in every season – He wants to become the place we call home and be the shelter under and in which we build our lives. (see Psalm 91:1 | Genesis 12:1 | Psalm 23:6)

SHEPHERD – Jesus is our Good Shepherd, and He said that no one would come to the Father but by Him. As we grow in our walk with Jesus – submitting to Him, there comes a point where He brings us before the Father and we get to know them both in a deeper way than before. Abba also shepherds us in His comfort and correction. (see John 10:11 | John 14:6 | John 17:3)

SOURCE – The word “Abba” means Father, and Father means Originator or Source. Abba is our place of origin – we came from Him, but through our parents. It doesn’t really matter how we got here – God opens the womb so His children can be brought into the earth. He also wants us to know Him as our Source – the place from which we draw strength, hope, joy, courage, contentment, and everything else in between. He is the Great I AM. ( Psalm 22:10 | Rev 21:6 | Exodus 3:14)

SURGEON – Another way we come to know the Father is in allowing Him to do a soul surgery – where our inner being is transformed by the renewing of our mind by the Truth, the surrendering, cleansing and exchanging of wills, painful memories, emotions and the like. Allowing God to heal us in this way deepens our walk with Him in such a beautiful and deeply personal way. (Psalm 23:4 | Psalm 34:18)

SUSTAINER – We also receive Abba as our Father when we learn to continually lean on Him as our sustainer. Some definitions of sustainer:; strengthen or support physically or mentally, bear (the weight of an object) without breaking or falling, cause to continue for an extended period or without interruption, cause to continue for an extended period or without interruption. Abba is our sustainer, when we make Him our shelter, our hiding place, our resting place etc we can continue in intimacy.

The Landmarks found in Psalm 23:

1 The LORD is my shepherd; (SHEPHERD) I shall not want. (SOURCE)

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. (SHEPHERD)

3 He restoreth my soul: (SURGEON) he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. (SHEPHERD)

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (SHEPHERD)

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: (SOURCE)

thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. (SOURCE)

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: (SUSTAINER)

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (SHELTER)
